Former Sri Lankan International Cricketer Sachitra Senanayake Arrested in Match-fixing Case

Former Sri Lankan international cricketer Sachitra Senanayake is deeply embroiled in the match fixing case. Sachitra Senanayake was arrested on Wednesday on charges of match-fixing. Sachitra Senanayake, who made his international debut in January 2012, has been in the limelight for his bowling action in the past as well.

The Sports Corruption Investigation Unit arrested former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachitra Senanayake after she surrendered in the morning. Three weeks ago, the court had banned him from going abroad. He has been accused of trying to fix matches in the 2020 Lanka Premier League. He allegedly instigated two players over the telephone to fix the match.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate Court had last month ordered the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration to impose a travel ban on Sachitra Senanayake. The Attorney General’s Department received this court order. The court was told that the Attorney General has received instructions from the Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry to frame criminal charges against the former off spinner.

Sachitra Senanayake, 38, played one Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka between 2012 and 2016. Sachitra Senanayake did not get any wicket in this test. At the same time, he took 53 wickets in ODIs and 25 wickets in T20s. Earlier, the Sri Lankan off-spinner was banned by the ICC for a suspect bowling action during the tour of England in May 2014. During the fourth ODI at Lord’s, he bent his elbow more than 15 degrees while bowling a few deliveries.
